Simplify Podcasting | Grow Brand Authority, Build Partnerships, Turn Listeners Into Loyal Clients

Your Mic’s Not Just for Talking—It’s for Connecting (and Converting) | #262

Episode 262

Let’s get one thing straight—your voice isn’t just noise in the void. It’s a business asset.

In this episode, I’m breaking down what it really means to use your podcast mic with purpose. We’re not here to ramble—we’re here to build connection, credibility, and conversions. You’ll learn why audio quality is about more than your microphone, how to speak like a CEO (not just a content creator), and why selective listeners are actually a GOOD thing.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re talking to yourself in a closet (literally), this one’s for you. We’ll cover:

  • Why picky listeners = powerful episodes
  • How to stop “just recording” and start intentionally communicating
  • Why your tone, phrasing, and pacing influence trust and authority
  • The secret to making your mic feel like a conversation, not a performance
  • Community beats content every time—God designed it that way

If you're a Christian business owner with a proven offer and have a podcast that isn't pulling its weight, or you want to launch a podcast to grow your business, this episode is for you - and so is the next bootcamp!

Join me May 13–17 REGISTER for the Profitable Podcast Bootcamp

This isn't another webinar. It’s a live, high-touch, implementation-heavy experience where you’ll learn how to monetize every episode and connect with your dream clients. Spots are limited—because connection > crowd size.

Your Mic’s Not Just for Talking—It’s for Connecting (and Converting) | #262

[00:00:00] Jen Rogers: You know the amazing thing about your microphone, it helps you get better at other things like conversations with a friend, conversations with a spouse, conversations with your kiddos. Do you know why? When you record podcast episodes, what you learn is You have a lot of verbal fillers.

[00:00:23] Jen Rogers: You say a lot of things like, um, you know what I mean, without fully explaining yourself. When you put a podcast episode together, here is what you learn. You learn that you have a business purpose, and you learn that you have a purpose for your listener. Before you ever craft your episode, you have a great understanding of those two things, which means...

[00:00:48] Jen Rogers: you're not going to say, do you know what I mean? When you say, "do you know what I mean?" On your show? What you're saying to your listener is you don't know what you mean. If you don't know what you mean. You cannot close that trust gap, especially today, where everyone is much more sophisticated as a listener, as a video watcher, as a reader, everyone's sophistication level has gone up exponentially since the world shut down.

[00:01:20] Jen Rogers: It's because that's how we learned to live. We learned to navigate the shift and say, okay, we have a higher level of expectation for how people are going to show up. This is why you see all these incredible backgrounds and lightings and microphones, because people know that when you set yourself up to look a certain way, then people will see you a certain way.

[00:01:46] Jen Rogers: It's no different with your voice. Absolutely no different with your voice. People will anticipate how you're going to show up. They'll anticipate some of your repeated phrases. They'll know your verbal [00:02:00] fillers maybe better than you do, and they will like your speech patterns because they're going to stick around and they're going to come back for more.

[00:02:08] Jen Rogers: Hi there, I'm Jen Rogers. I am host of Simplify Podcasting. I believe you can simplify podcasting. I not only believe it, I live it. I live it in my own podcast and I live it with my clients. Whether clients hire me as a podcast host coach, or a podcast guest coach, or they hire me to help them get over a hurdle in their business, communication is essential.

[00:02:36] Jen Rogers: This is what makes podcasting the most trusted platform of 2025, because what happens is this, when you show up and you speak well, and you speak with intention, your listener has the opportunity to listen to you in their PJs, in their bed, in their cars. In the bathtub as they're changing the baby's diaper, as they're working on something else, they get to choose.

[00:03:08] Jen Rogers: Whereas when you have a video podcast, or is that a vodcast? I don't know. It's like a vlog, but a vodcast. If you vodcast there's this requirement that they have to watch you in order to follow along with you. So podcasting is unique in that it gives the listener much more flexibility in how they listen to you.

[00:03:32] Jen Rogers: And when they feel comfortable listening to you in PJs, they're probably going to feel comfortable reaching out to you when the time comes, when you issue that call to action and they finally say, I'm not going to take it anymore. I'm not going to tolerate whatever this pain point is in my life. I'm going to take the next step.

[00:03:50] Jen Rogers: I know one of the things that people are working on is, how do I become a better speaker? How do I reach my ideal [00:04:00] client through podcasting? You know the answer?

[00:04:04] Jen Rogers: It's the same for growing more downloads, How do you get more downloads?

[00:04:08] Jen Rogers: Because when you get more downloads, then you know you have more ears listening. You build more of a loyal listenership, and that means they're hearing your calls to action more often, and they're taking that next step to explore what it could be like to work with you. They already have a pretty good idea by how you show up on your podcast.

[00:04:28] Jen Rogers: That is powerful, and since it takes so much longer now to build trust, because our sophistication levels and our expectations have risen in who we listen to, how long we listen to someone, then you can take all of your expertise package it up, deliver it in your microphone, and close that trust gap for your most sophisticated listeners- when you know the business purpose and the individual listener purpose of every single episode. This is why you hear me say you can monetize every episode. And that is where your voice comes in, not just the way you sound. It's also the way you string words together. We're going to get into that in today's episode number 262, how we can use our voice to more effectively communicate so

[00:05:31] Jen Rogers: your listener can't wait to press play on your next episode.

[00:05:37] Jen Rogers: I have three specific things to share with you. before we jump into this episode, I invite you to join me inside the Profitable Podcast Bootcamp. We kick off on May 13th. We've got five days of learning and practicing how to monetize every single episode, and it's more than I know that you know that you know this.

[00:05:59] Jen Rogers: It's more than hopping on a microphone and sharing a few ideas. When you design your podcast to be a money-making machine, you're well, you're going to have more fun. Lemme let me guarantee you.

[00:06:13] Jen Rogers: I guarantee you will have more fun. Putting your podcast episodes together because you have a purpose behind each episode. Remember, earlier on, I mentioned there are two things to keep in mind for every single episode. Every episode has a job to do! A job for your business and a job for your listener.

[00:06:34] Jen Rogers: And you must make this clear upfront, so your listener is deciding, do I want to stick around? Is this something that applies to me, or am I going to skip this episode? That's actually not a bad thing, and I'll explain why at the end of this episode. Alright, head on over to coach jen rogers.com/podcast bootcamp to sign up for the Profitable Podcast Bootcamp that

[00:07:02] Jen Rogers: kicks off May 13th and yes, yes, yes. I want to say hashtag replay. There will be replays. However, you won't get them if you don't sign up! Sign up for the Profitable Podcast bootcamp at www.coachjenrogers.com/podcastbootcamp and I will see you live.

[00:07:22] Jen Rogers: We will do it live together. Be sure you sign up. How do you become a better speaker? What do you think?

[00:07:30] Jen Rogers: There are general answers and there are tactical answers. The general answer is, we must practice. In order to become better, we must practice, and we also must listen to our recordings. We must watch some presentations that we've done.

[00:07:47] Jen Rogers: Look at our body language and assess what seems to be working and what is detracting from the words we are sharing with our audiences. It's important to go back and listen to [00:08:00] an episode from time to time to assess your thought leadership, to assess how you are showing up for your brand and for your listener, to assess did this episode do what it promised to do?

[00:08:17] Jen Rogers: In this episode we'll get tactical. When we started this episode, I gave examples of verbal fillers of, um, ahs, you know. Those are very basic things that we must continue to work on.

[00:08:30] Jen Rogers: All right. And write. Okay. Do you know what I mean? Common phrases. Expressions we use that rise to the surface as we think about what are our verbal fillers.

[00:08:42] Jen Rogers: Are you on a mission to destroy the listener experience when they press play on your show? That sounds like a ridiculous question. Of course not. Of course we are pursuing the opposite. We want to create a listener experience that is memorable, relatable, and calls them to take action to become a part of the transformation that we are sharing with them.

[00:09:08] Jen Rogers: So there are words and phrases to avoid outside of those common filler words that we're all very familiar with. The first one, just! As a thought leader. As the expert in your field, you are not just something, you are the thing, instead of, I'm just here to share whatever your area of expertise is, state what you'll walk away with.

[00:09:37] Jen Rogers: Or you could say, I'll share three things that are designed to, and then whatever those three things are that are designed to move your listener towards that transformation.

[00:09:48]

[00:09:49] Jen Rogers: avoid this expression with that four letter word, just. I just wanted to say, instead of, I just wanted to say, say what you want to say.

[00:09:59] Jen Rogers: For [00:10:00] example, you could say, here's what I know for sure. Or have you noticed when X happens? I believe this happens because, so you are taking ownership of your belief and what you're relaying to your audience.

[00:10:19] Jen Rogers: When you avoid the word just, or the expression, I just wanted to say, your credibility and your authority goes up because you are teaching and inviting and encouraging and supporting people out of your expertise. So just: let's throw that out. You're not just something, you are the thing. Let's move on to the next example. There are two variations of this. One. This will probably make you feel fill in the blank, or you might say, you probably think fill in the blank. Listen, you know how you feel about something.

[00:11:05] Jen Rogers: and your ideal client listening to your podcast episode

[00:11:09] Jen Rogers: knows how they feel or think about something too. If they don't, they still want to be invited in instead of being told how they feel, how they should feel, how they should think, or what they do Think.

[00:11:25] Jen Rogers: Instead of saying, this will probably make you feel, or you probably think, invite your listener in to consider how they feel about something.

[00:11:36] Jen Rogers: For example, when you hear the word creative, what immediately comes to mind? Perhaps you thought of a painter or an entrepreneur or a musician or something else entirely. When we talk about creatives together today, here's the context. It's you as a podcast host and guest.

[00:11:57] Jen Rogers: You are the [00:12:00] creative. One more example, well, I guess that will do it for this topic.

[00:12:07] Jen Rogers: Instead of guessing, be sure you are the one creating this episode, after all!

[00:12:14] Jen Rogers: As you go through each element of your episode, you want to transition with purpose. You want to keep your audience engaged and guide them along the path that you promised at the beginning of your episode. an example of transitioning with purpose is this. Before I dive into the next topic, remember this, then share what you want them to remember.

[00:12:36] Jen Rogers: Or you could say it's time to take action on what you just heard. What are you willing to do next? You've just heard three examples to enhance your communication, your effectiveness, and your clarity with your podcast voice. The first was removing the word just. The second reminded you to avoid telling people how they feel or what they're thinking.

[00:13:05] Jen Rogers: And the third example reminded you to transition with purpose. When you think about becoming a better speaker, which one of these is an area you can practice first?

[00:13:21] Jen Rogers: If you are not sure where to start, totally cool. Go back and listen to an episode that's a few episodes ago so you have some distance from when you put it together or go back and listen to a guesting opportunity that you did.

[00:13:36] Jen Rogers: And as you listen, listen for the verbal fillers. And the confidence that you have in sharing what it is you wanted to share. Be sure you identify the business purpose of that episode and the listener outcome for that episode. The business purpose for this episode for me is to invite you into the Profitable [00:14:00] Podcast Bootcamp.

[00:14:01] Jen Rogers: If you haven't registered yet, head on over to coach jen rogers.com/podcast bootcamp. We kick off May 13th, and we are going to have an incredible time and we will talk about verbal fillers and we'll probably model a few accidentally and on purpose as we go through the bootcamp. That's my business purpose, to invite you into the bootcamp.

[00:14:24] Jen Rogers: The listener purpose, your experience as you listen to this is to help you become a better speaker. When you are a better speaker, I believe you stand up a little taller. I believe you present yourself with much more confidence because you are clear on what you want to share with the people You have a heart to serve.

[00:14:48] Jen Rogers: Becoming a good speaker, is just that! It is the becoming. We learn tips and tricks all along the way to continue to develop our public speaking. And the better you speak, the better the listener experience. And the better the listener experience, the more likely they are to recommend your show to someone else and to listen to the next episode.

[00:15:18]

[00:15:18] Jen Rogers: What are you willing to do to uplevel your speaking skill?

[00:15:24] Jen Rogers: Podcasting. It can feel like a solo gig because it is often a solo gig. You are recording with your ideal client in mind, but it's just you, your mic, and maybe your closet studio. There's no shame in that game!

[00:15:41] Jen Rogers: But let me tell you, every episode is an asset. Every word has the power to reinforce your authority, elevate your brand, and attract the right clients.

[00:15:55] Jen Rogers: So when you record, I'm not just hoping you sound good, [00:16:00] I'm hoping you implement. Because podcasting excellence, it's not just about audio quality, it's about the quality of your voice, your tone, your pace, your confidence, your ability to create connection.

[00:16:15] Jen Rogers: Your leadership is carried through every syllable. Here's a pro tip. Don't just imagine you're talking to your audience. Visualize your best client sitting right there with you. The one who pays in full, shows up, ready, and gets results. That simple shift, it's game changing. It moves you from talking to truly communicating, and that is where your influence multiplies.

[00:16:43] Jen Rogers: Let's take this further. Instead of talking to your dream clients, how about being in the room with them? Join me inside the Profitable Podcast Bootcamp happening May 13th to the 17th at noon, Eastern. This is not a webinar I repeat. This is not a webinar. It is a working room of podcasters who have proven offers and they are building out monetization strategies together live and in real time.

[00:17:14] Jen Rogers: By the end of our time together during this week, you'll know how to monetize every single episode, increase your credibility and attract aligned clients through your podcast. Spots are limited because we are going deep. It's implementation over information. Save your seat now at www.coachjenrogers.com/podcastbootcamp  .

[00:17:39] Jen Rogers: Now, about that hook I dropped earlier. Why it's actually a good thing when your audience is selective about which episodes they listen to.

[00:17:50] Jen Rogers: Here's the deal. Savvy listeners curate their growth. They're just like you. They don't waste time. When you clearly articulate the reward of each episode upfront, like this one, how to become a better communicator, your audience knows whether it's for them and they trust you more for that clarity.

[00:18:11] Jen Rogers: It's not about the numbers, it's about alignment. And when you serve through clarity, your credibility goes up. I'd love to hear your take. Is it a win when someone skips an episode that's not for them. Let's talk about it inside the virtual podcast school. The link is in the show notes.

[00:18:30] Jen Rogers: PS got some podcaster love to give? Leave a review on your favorite podcasting platform or forward this episode to a business bestie who's ready to step into their voice. It's always, always, always a joy to come here and simplify podcasting with you. I'll catch you in the next episode, and I hope to see you inside the bootcamp.
