The Biggest Podcasting Myths That Are Keeping You Stuck | #258
[00:00:05] Jen Rogers: Think about something incredibly large, big oversized, super-sized. You got it? Now, I hope you're not thinking about the McDonald's french fries, super-sized pack. I hope you're thinking about something big for you, something that is a super sized dream. And you're wondering, could this really happen?
[00:00:36] Jen Rogers: You might be wondering that about podcasting. Can you really make money using your voice to share a story? To share a message, to help others hear how they could transform from where they are, to where you know they can go based on your own experience. A long time ago when I was in the military, I remember a big, big deal.
[00:01:03] Jen Rogers: It was a training event. We were practicing to be ambushed. Now, I don't know about you, but there's not very many times in my life I've practiced for an ambush. When we did the work, when we practiced for the ambush, we took many things into consideration. And the things we considered, how big was the enemy?
[00:01:25] Jen Rogers: Where could the enemy hide? How could they attack us? We planned for many scenarios that never happened. Yet, the purpose in the planning is to prepare for the just in case.
[00:01:41] Jen Rogers: This may be where this ideation, this planning phase about what could happen may be the exact same place where podcasting myths have come from. Listen, there are many people who have ideas about the power podcasting.
[00:01:57] Jen Rogers: As you listen to today's episode, I want [00:02:00] you to know for certain that regardless of what is happening around you, regardless of the algorithms, regardless of what people are telling you, regardless of what you're seeing other podcasters do, when you decide to plan for an ambush, if you will, to put your stake in the ground to begin your podcast, you can experience incredible change in your business!
[00:02:26] Jen Rogers: Today we'll bust three podcasting myths that prevent far too many entrepreneurs from brick and mortar professionals to online coaches, to hybrid business owners from launching their thought leadership in the form of a podcast, or pursuing guesting opportunities to reach new audiences.
[00:02:47] Jen Rogers: Now if you have already launched and your show isn't driving revenue to your business the way you thought it would and could listen in to see if one of these myths is covertly, ambushing your mindset about how your podcast can work for you. When you reflect on your podcast mindset, how you feel, what you think, what you're experiencing.
[00:03:09] Jen Rogers: It's kind of like hitting the pause button on your fave podcast to respond to a prompt by the host or the guest. If you've been around here for a while, you know, I invite you to press the pause button regularly enough so you can reflect on key insights that will help you grow your podcast.
[00:03:30] Jen Rogers: If you're new to these parts, I am so excited that you are here. You are definitely in for a treat today as we bust these three podcasting myths.
[00:03:41] Jen Rogers: Each episode is an investment of our time to simplify podcasting and leverage podcasting for our businesses. We don't just bust myths. We perform SWOT analyses of our environment and take action so those threats don't ambush our livelihood, and we [00:04:00] practice strategies that work so we can grow our shows.
[00:04:03] Jen Rogers: Because we're blessed with entrepreneurial gifts and a ton of grit, we experiment too. Hey there, I'm Jen Rogers. I believe giving your audience the ability to listen to your voice on demand builds trust faster than any other method or social tool. Why? Because you build trust every time you close that 18 inch gap between your listeners' earbuds and their hearts.
[00:04:29] Jen Rogers: You build connection, you alleviate the inherent anxiety people have when they're looking to hire someone new. You are also walking on what I call a holy 18 inches. As you lead your listener with your voice, whether you choose audio, video, or you use both of them to leverage your thought leadership, there is a formula for creating episodes that land for your audience and compel them to take action.
[00:04:59] Jen Rogers: I am on a mission to help 100 podcasters each month amplify their podcasting voice on the airwaves. Are you one of them? I hope so!
[00:05:08] Jen Rogers: Your first step to simplifying podcasting is this: gather intel about the standard operating procedures for podcast hosting and guesting. Just like when I was in the military and we were training for an ambush, we had standard operating procedures, we had an Army manual for how you did business. It's no different with podcasting and just because there's a manual, a guide, a standard operating procedure, you know what?
[00:05:37] Jen Rogers: It does not mean you have zero creative power to move.
[00:05:42] Jen Rogers: In fact, I believe using a guide enhances your creativity as you share your wisdom with the world.
[00:05:52] Jen Rogers: Head on over to coachjenrogers.com/podcastsop to grab your standard operating procedure, whether you are a host or a guest, and as you'll often hear me, remind you when you host your show, one of the best ways to grow your show is to be a guest on other podcasts.
[00:06:13] Jen Rogers: So be sure you grab that podcast SOP. Head on over to coachjenrogers.com/podcastsop. Alright, are you ready to rumble? Cool. Hey, before I reveal and respond to those three myths, got any guesses as to what they are?
[00:06:31] Jen Rogers: What prevents business owners from moving forward ith podcasting? I'm confident, you know at least one of these myths. The biggie one of them! Let's explore and bust them together. Once they're exposed, you can tackle them one by one in a way that makes the most sense to expand your influence, your impact, and your income with podcasting.
[00:06:55] Jen Rogers: You are listening to time to Simplify Podcasting. Welcome to episode number 258!
[00:07:03] Jen Rogers: Are you ready for it? Are you ready for myth number one? Let's do it.
[00:07:08] Jen Rogers: The interesting thing about myths is they prevent people from entering. I wonder if your competitors have fostered these myths to keep you out of this powerful podcasting arena. If that were true, that would really tick me off. How about you? Okay.
[00:07:27] Jen Rogers: Myth number one. You need a big audience. False.
[00:07:33] Jen Rogers: My audience is not, um, Amy Porterfield size. Hello there, you! Thanks for joining me.
[00:07:42] Jen Rogers: I'm good with starting at the beginning and building from there, and that's what I've been doing, building my audience size and monetizing as I go. You don't need a ginormous audience.
[00:07:58] Jen Rogers: While we know that there is an [00:08:00] inherent correlation between the number of people you have in the audience and the number of buyers, everyone in your audience is not a buyer. Some people are there just to be entertained. Some people just want to hear your voice. Sometimes it's your mom, your dad, your husband, your wife, your brother, your sister, your friend, listening in to support you.
[00:08:22] Jen Rogers: Whatever the reason for the listener, your reason remains the same. And in episode after episode, you will hear me share there are two purposes for every episode you create. One. What is your business purpose? And two: What is the takeaway for the listener? So in today's episode, I promised to share with you three myths that are preventing people from entering podcasting and what you can do to overcome those myths.
[00:08:53] Jen Rogers: And really what you can do is understand that they're just a myth! They don't need to prevent you from using podcasting to grow your impact, your influence, and your income. Okay. Despite the size of my audience, I monetize my audience. And you can do the same! Whether you choose to go the route of live launching, boot camps, courses, private coaching,
[00:09:18] Jen Rogers: drawing people into your private practice, promoting retreats, workshops, Q+As, whatever it is, you use your podcast to invite people to come and do life with you. Whatever that means, you invite your ideal client to come and do life with you. What size audience do you need? I propose you need to start with a solid 100 loyal listeners. Engage with them. Likely they're your current clients or members of your podcast launch team.
[00:09:51] Jen Rogers: Engaging means building community, and you already know how to do that. Whether you do events in person or virtually, [00:10:00] you show up and you serve them again to do life with you, to participate in the transformation that you offer together. You can interview your clients for episodes. You can interview complimentary experts, colleagues, and for some you might even interview your direct competition.
[00:10:20] Jen Rogers: There's no wrong way to serve your audience. Serving is defined as to be of use in helping your audience achieve something. When you build out your show with a solid strategy to begin with 100 and multiply, your show will grow faster.
[00:10:40] Jen Rogers: Myth number two. Where oh where! Oh, where will you find the time?
[00:10:50] Jen Rogers: This is the myth I'm confident you guessed, of the three I was going to share with you today.
[00:10:55] Jen Rogers: Let's get downright historical. Okay. Are you in? Remember when you began to do a new thing? When I first learned to drive. My 18-year-old boyfriend, oh boy. That brings back some memories. My 18-year-old boyfriend at the time took me out to drive to learn how to drive a stick shift, on his parents' property.
[00:11:18] Jen Rogers: What I remember, and I don't know if this is true or not because you know me, memory does. Um, memory is a funny thing. Each time I share this story, of course it shifts a little bit. But what I remember is learning how to drive a stick shift on a potato field. Now that's probably not the best terrain to learn how to drive anyway, much less learn how to drive a stick shift. I knew I wanted to drive, and I was willing to do what it took to learn. What was that thing that came to mind for you? What were you willing to do to learn how to do that new thing?
[00:12:00] When I was learning to drive on that potato field with that stick shift, I took advantage of the opportunity. That's what makes us great entrepreneurs. We're willing to take a risk. You can imagine how this went down for me.
[00:12:13] Jen Rogers: Launching a podcast without proper preparation, will have you experiencing some of those things I did with my 18-year-old boyfriend when I was learning how to drive, learning how to shift the gears, how to press in the clutch and the brake and the gas, and how to your feet work and your hands work all at the same time and watch where you're going as well.
[00:12:33] Jen Rogers: There's a technique and once you learn it, then of course we know what happens. You do. It's second nature, you don't even think about it. And not only can you drive and manage all the pedals and the gears, you can put on your lipstick, talk on your cell phone and do all those other things
[00:12:48] Jen Rogers: we co-mingle with driving. Listen, if you are wondering, "where will I find the time to launch and sustain a show," I've got you! That's what those standard operating procedures are for, to give you a solid overview of things to consider and plan for so you don't sputter out.
[00:13:10] Jen Rogers: So you don't stall. And so you can launch and sustain your show while you nurture your clients, build your community, and attract new clients. Do you want to know more about how to leverage podcasting without being on the content hamster wheel? Because the time factor is related to how long is it going to take to create the content?
[00:13:34] Jen Rogers: Listen you, you're already genius. You already know. You know your field of expertise, you've been working with your clients. You have a proven offer. You know how to communicate with them, you know how to attract them. So when you create your podcast, you can use that podcast for all different sorts of content.
[00:13:53] Jen Rogers: It's the same content that is spliced and diced and repurposed in multiple [00:14:00] ways. if you want to know how to never enter that content hamster wheel,
[00:14:04] Jen Rogers: Be sure you listen to episode number 257, Why your business can't afford to ignore podcasting any longerup with the link in the show notes. And if you haven't snagged those standard operating procedures, those SOPs, be sure you head on over to www.coachjenrogers.com/podcastsop . Let's tackle that third myth. Before you hear myth number three, remember the first myth is you need a ginormous audience size. Not true.
[00:14:36] Jen Rogers: Myth number two, it takes too much time. I believe the opposite is true. I believe it will take you less time. Once you acquire the podcasting skills and you learn how to segment your content, especially when you hand off the production and the editing to your team, or you hire out for production and editing.
[00:15:00] Jen Rogers: When we work together, that's exactly what we decide. We determine whether you are having an audio show, a video show. Or both of them. It really depends on what your needs are and what the needs of your audience are. Those are business decisions, and you already have a business plan. So, the podcast you create aligns with your business goals.
[00:15:24] Jen Rogers: It aligns with the content that you're going to create, will align with when your next live launches, for example, when your next course is being released If you have just one call to action on your show, which is to book a call, then that's what you're going to invite people to do repeatedly, and the content you're going to share will respond to the typical questions that new clients have.
[00:15:49] Jen Rogers: you are building up your library of thought leadership that you can direct new clients to. There are so many ways to use a podcast. This is why I know that creating and launching and sustaining a podcast ends up creating more assets that have higher value, that resonate, that build trust with your audience and take you less time.
[00:16:12] Jen Rogers: If you're interested in getting started, it's time. It's time! At the release of this episode. We are closing in at the end of the first quarter of 2025. You still have time to launch your podcast in this year! The year of podcasting. That's what I'm calling 2025. It is the year of podcasting. What's holding you back?
[00:16:32] Jen Rogers: Really, what's holding you back? What fears, what concerns do you have? I've addressed two of them. Are you ready to jump into the third myth, remember, this might be your competitor that wants you to believe that this is true, to prevent you from podcasting because podcasting is so ding dang powerful.
[00:16:50] Jen Rogers: Alright, let's get to myth number three.
[00:16:53] While some podcasters believe you can rely on purely organic SEO growth. I beg to differ. I believe it is an asset that must be marketed just like you market other things. Purely organic is not going to get the job done. We are creating a podcast to monetize every single episode.
[00:17:18] Jen Rogers: We are guesting on other podcasts to monetize that guesting experience., While SEO and organic growth are important, it is one way that you can grow. It is the slow boat, and this is why you need to appear on social. This is why you need to leverage your email list.
[00:17:38] Jen Rogers: This is why you need to invite people in repeatedly through other means besides SEO and organic outreach.
[00:17:47] Jen Rogers: That's it. It's that simple. You use a podcast and apply the foundational business principles of leveraging each and every asset you create.
[00:17:59] Jen Rogers: I [00:18:00] go back to the question I asked moments ago, really. What is holding you back?
[00:18:05] Jen Rogers: Do you want to talk about it? I'd love to connect with you and hear what your podcasting ideas are and help you get over that hurdle of indecision. Hear me! I'm not saying get over the hurdle so you can launch. Launching a podcast is not right for everyone. Making a decision and not losing time on wondering if podcasting is right for you and your business and how you can monetize podcasting.
[00:18:30] Jen Rogers: Losing time on not knowing the answer to that question, you definitely don't have time for that. There are several ways you can get in touch with me. and of course, every single one of them is going to be in the show notes.
[00:18:43] Jen Rogers: A strategy I teach is avoiding overwhelm for your listener and not sending them to all these different places.
[00:18:51] Jen Rogers: So I'm going to send you to one. Want to have a conversation about whether or not podcasting is right for you and your business to grow your audience, to create powerful content in less time?
[00:19:02] Jen Rogers: Send me an email. That's it. Just send me an email, jen@coachjenrogers.com . Super, super easy. Send me an email, jen@coachjenrogers.com and ask me what you want to know about podcasting. I'll do my best to serve you, to help you move forward on whatever decision you make when it comes to podcasting.
[00:19:25] Jen Rogers: Thanks for joining me today on Simplify Podcasting. I have thoroughly enjoyed obliterating... Oh, I love that word, obliterating these myths!
[00:19:34] Jen Rogers: Alright! Stay tuned for future shows related to credibility, visibility, monetization strategies, and more as we prepare, to go together into the next Profitable podcast bootcamp. That's coming up May 13th through May 17th. By the way, I hope you join us!
[00:19:57] Jen Rogers: Your very first step in [00:20:00] podcast monetization is to grab those standard operating procedures. Head on over to www.coachjenrogers.com/podcastsop to grab the guide for podcast hosting or podcast guesting or both of them. Be sure you get what you need.
[00:20:17] Jen Rogers: Each guide is designed to prevent overwhelm from creeping in, and to give you an overview of what are realistic expectations when it comes to hosting your show. What things do you take into consideration? What do you need to be aware of? How can you be a mic drop, memorable guest?
[00:20:33] Jen Rogers: These things in more in are inside the podcasting SOPs. Hey, if today's episode blessed you, encouraged you, supported you, and got you asking more powerful questions. You know how we can expand organically?
[00:20:48] Jen Rogers: When you share the show with a friend, your voice has power. This is why podcasting works. Your voice is influential. Your voice creates change.
[00:20:59] Jen Rogers: Will you help someone else learn about the benefits of launching and guesting on podcasting so they can leverage podcasting to grow their influence, their impact, and their income? Recommend this show to a friend. I appreciate it.
[00:21:13] Jen Rogers: Alright, God bless you and I will catch you in the next episode.
