Is Podcasting Sustainable? Q+A with Jen Rogers | #226

[00:00:00] Jen: Have you ever noticed that when you ask a question, you get some form of an answer. Hey, even if it's the silent treatment that still is some form of an answer. The thing about questions is this. They are incredibly powerful. Asking those questions helps us move forward in a decision that we're making.

[00:00:23] Jen: Oftentimes we can experience overwhelm when the question is really, really big. So instead of addressing a bigger question, we break it down in small parts.

[00:00:33] Jen: That is exactly what we are doing today on Time To Simplify. Hi, there I am. Jen Rogers, your hostess with the mostest!. And I absolutely love working with entrepreneurs. I decided I was going to do a few episodes that are Q+A.

[00:00:48] Jen: Speaking of questions, you may be wondering how many Q+A episodes are you going to do, Jen? I'm wondering the same thing. It all depends on how many questions you ask. So you keep asking [00:01:00] and I promise you,

[00:01:01] Jen: I'll give you a solid clarifying, simplified response.

[00:01:06] Jen:  Now it is risky business. And here's what I mean by that. When you ask a question, I am most likely going to ask you one or three questions back, and that's exactly how it goes down in today's episode. Welcome to Time To Simplify.

[00:01:21] Jen: This is a short and sweet Q+A with Jen. And the question we're answering today is thisis podcasting. sustainable.

[00:01:30] Jen:  today's question comes from Leslie,

[00:01:32] Jen: Leslie recently signed up for the podcast training event where you learn how to grow your business with podcasting. And whenever you sign up for the training event, which you can find at coachjenrogers.com/launchyourpodcast. I ask you one question. So that's where today's question comes from.

[00:01:50] Jen: Leslie. Thank you so much for signing up for the podcast training event. I cannot wait to learn more about your ideas for your show.

[00:01:59] [00:02:00]

[00:02:00] Jen: Hey, Leslie. It's Jen. Good morning. Good morning. I am so excited that you have joined the community by signing up for the free podcast training event. The question I asked you when you signed up, was this, "What is your biggest hurdle or your concern when it comes to launching your podcast?"

[00:02:17] Jen: You asked the question, is it sustainable?

[00:02:20] Jen: Is podcasting sustainable? Such a great question. And the answer is it depends. And what does it depend on? Well, it depends on you and your level of commitment. Many many people start a podcast. There's a big giant podcast, graveyard, podcasters fade out, and many after only a few episodes. In fact, the majority of people start and they quit. There are a few reasons why. I believe one of the main reasons most people do not experience success with their podcast is they do not take the time to plan for their show.

[00:02:57] Jen: They do not take the time to identify [00:03:00] how doing a podcast is aligned with their business plan. So the real question is what do you think is the underlying basis for you starting your own show? When you ask, is it sustainable?

[00:03:13] Jen: And I answer, it depends. It depends on how you answer these questions. So here are a few things for you to think about journal about and then fit into your business plan. The first thing is, what is your business? What is your plan? How do you see podcasting fitting into your plan? Ask yourself, what am I afraid of?

[00:03:36] Jen: Ask yourself:

[00:03:37] Jen: What am I curious about? What are you wondering about Leslie? When it comes to launching your show? When you go through this training event, you'll be asking yourself questions that help you get to the answer of what is the purpose of me starting a podcast anyway? If I were to do this, what would my show look like?

[00:03:56] Jen: What would it sound like? Who am I speaking to? Who am I [00:04:00] serving?

[00:04:00] Jen: It's important you are clear on the things before you hit the record button! Before you stress out over which microphone do I buy? Where do I record? How do I even get it on the airwaves and in the podcast apps? You need to answer these questions all related to what is the purpose of my show?

[00:04:20]

[00:04:20] Jen: Some people don't have a business when they start a podcast. Some people are never interested in having a business when they start a podcast. And that is totally cool. In fact, many people do it for a ministry purpose. The thing is when you are sharing the good news, you're doing it for a purpose to grow the kingdom, which means you need a game plan.

[00:04:40] Jen: So you have a ministry purpose, you have ministry goals and desired outcomes. So how does starting a podcast align with your ministry goals? There are many others who are doing it for a hobby. Say, I just want to talk. I just want to share a message with people so that I can be heard. Because I know I [00:05:00] can help people.

[00:05:00] Jen: And that's totally cool. If you are interested in starting a podcast as a hobby, you still need to decide how long am I going to do my show? How many episodes am I going to have? Who am I speaking to? Because you want to be able to serve the people that you say you want to serve. Even if it's a hobby, you want to know who you're talking to.

[00:05:19] Jen: You want to have a way to get feedback from people. And that's why it's important that you start out with a podcasting plan. That way you're not going to burn out. You're not going to experience pod fade because you know what it is you're about. And, you know, the purpose your podcast is serving. There's a lot that goes into starting a podcast.

[00:05:41] Jen: It can feel overwhelming. And that's exactly why I recommend hiring a podcasting coach. If you know, you want to start a podcast, coaching is the way that can get you there much faster. It can help you avoid the tech overwhelm and it will keep you focused on what's most important to you. [00:06:00] You know how there's nothing new under the sun?

[00:06:01] Jen: Well, there's nothing new under the podcasting sun. It's important that we start with the end in mind because the work that we do, it's all related to who we serve, how we serve, how we want to show up in the world, how we want to disciple other people, how we want to create community. And a podcast is a powerful tool to do that. So I know that if podcasting is right for you, if you decide yes, I'm in to create a podcast, then it's time to join the next 90 day sprint.

[00:06:31] Jen: Let me tell you what this sprint is not. It is not a library of courses where I'm going to send you on your way to go do it on your own. That would be completely opposite of the reason why I designed this sprint.

[00:06:47] Jen: When I started my show, I was so exhausted so quickly. I was so frustrated trying to figure out all the things on my own. I definitely knew I was in overwhelm and dangerously close [00:07:00] to burnout.

[00:07:01] Jen: I didn't understand that if I just hired a coach, I could have saved at least a year of my podcasting pain. That's exactly what I want to do for you. Inside the 90 day sprint.

[00:07:13] Jen: It is a cohort, which means there are limited seats. There is a small number of seats available so we can work together one on one to create your powerful show.

[00:07:27] Jen: If that sounds like a good fit for you, then head on over to coachjenrogers.com/podcastcoach. Check out the details for the next 90 day podcast sprint. Now, if you were saying, “Hey, wait a minute, wait a minute, Jen. I'm still not sure if starting a podcast is right for me.” Totally cool. That is exactly why you start with the free training event. Head on over to coachjenrogers.com/launchyourpodcast. No matter what you're

[00:08:00] doing, if you're evaluating if podcasting is a good fit for you or, you know, it is the right next step and you want to launch your show in 90 days, everything can be found at coachjenrogers.com.

[00:08:13] Jen: And remember, there's no D in my name, sometimes I say, if there's a D in my name, I might be married to a famous football quarterback. But I am not. I am married to a PhD student in seminary. No D! CoachJenRogers.com.

[00:08:29] Jen: Speaking of football, you know that it is a football team. So when you joined the sprint, you become part of the 90-Day sprint team. We're all in it together. In 90 days, you will walk away with your podcast on the podcast apps. When you show up, when you do the work, you can launch a show, a good show that has clarity

[00:08:54] Jen: and purpose and loyal listeners without all the tech overwhelm [00:09:00] in 90 days.

[00:09:01] Jen: Yes. Inside the 90-day sprint, that's where you gain momentum. You get clarity and accountability, and you are excited about what you're doing. You have other entrepreneurs who understand this is a hard, hard thing made much easier by doing it in community with one another. You'll have me coming alongside you as your podcast coach saying yes.

[00:09:24] Jen: Yes, you can. And here is the next step. One of the things I am so pleased to hear from my clients is when they say, Jen, you broke it all down in a way that I could manage it.

[00:09:37] Jen: My mission is to de-complicate the process of creating your podcast for you to make it easier for you. So you know that one next right step to take. I am on a mission to not just prevent burnout, but to significantly reduce the overwhelm that comes along when we're attempting to do something new.

[00:09:59] Jen: If [00:10:00] you're like me, you want to do what Ronald Reagan encouraged all of us to do! Trust, but verify here's some verification from one of my clients, Ginny Hatfield.

[00:10:12] Ginny Hatfield: I just absolutely loved working with you, Jen. You were just so amazing. You gave me so much, energy and so much power and just so much confidence and just keeping me from being overwhelmed. You broke everything down in just small enough steps that I could get everything done that I need to get done

[00:10:31] Ginny Hatfield: within the week. And so I just really appreciative that, , you just made everything so organized and so broken down in tech so that I could understand it and implement it. So I appreciate that. And I just loved working with you. You made every session just fun!

[00:10:49] Ginny Hatfield: Just take that first step of faith, and then after that step, she's going to share you with the next step, and with her organization skills, you're not going to feel overwhelmed.

[00:10:58] Ginny Hatfield: She's only going to give you what [00:11:00] you need to get done right then. So that you can both meet your goal, coaching with her, that you will succeed. I feel like now that I can sit down, and I can do anything that I put my mind to.

[00:11:13] Jen: So don't do this. Don't do any new business initiative on your own. It's important to be inside of a community of people who get you. Do you want to be gotten? I would love to meet you, connect with you…And be the WHO that helps you create a binge-worthy podcast.

[00:11:32] Jen: So if you're looking for that accountability, that organization, that clarity on what the next one step is head on over to www.coachjenrogers.com/podcastcoach

[00:11:44] Jen: PS. If you would like your question featured on the show. I'll answer it in a similar way that I answered Leslie's question. All you need to do is click on one of the many links in the show notes to send me a message, whether it's an email, a voice message, or sending me a quick text.

[00:12:00] I'd love to know what you're thinking about, what that block is before you say yes to starting your podcast, because that answer might be that one thing you need to move forward in growing your business.

[00:12:13] Jen: Even if you say no to podcasting, that is clarity.

[00:12:17] Jen: You are gaining clarity on whether or not podcasting is your right next step. And the only way to get there is to ask powerful questions. So click one of the links in the show notes to leave me a message and I'll feature it on a Q and A with Jen. All right, God bless you. Take care. I will catch you in the next episode!
